Lon,
Thanks for bringin the thread back round. Nice neck on the blackout! Maybe black screws for the PG holes? How many Zodiacs are there? You could do a motif. Cover the holes with the Zodiacs? Or not...too many ideas racing through me bonce.

You are correct there are other 'vintage blonde' Squiers, and the Custom II is one of them. I also remember a batch of chinese Squier Teles in the Standard form, don't recall Standard or Affinity, in the dijon vein.
After all this time I still haven't seen a VB Squier 51 in the flesh other than my two, so perhaps mine are not that disturbing in color in person as compared to any others.
Yeah, I got a bunch of black 51 bodies slated for nitro, of course they'll have to come first.

Thanks dp. That particular pickguard can find a home elsewhere; with so many 51s to mess with, finding a swapper with close enough pickguard screw hole locations does usually work. But that definitely is the benefit of a full opaque repaint, to fill some of those holes and put on a smaller design p'guard. |

Lon: I really like the all-black theme. Nice work and good luck finishing it off!
Boris: I still think somebody ought to make a true Vintage Blond '51. I know first hand how tough it is to take the finish down, but maybe you'd have better luck than me. One thing I considered was to do a white to yellow burst, with white edges fading into the yellow in the middle. Maybe you can pull that off?

Okay, so I wanna add a dual concentric stack pot to my '51 for volume+tone, with a gibson or jazzmaster style 3-way for pickup selector, and two DPDT switches - one for bridge humbucker coil tap, and one to select which coil is activated (inner or outer), and also maybe a Buckethead/Jonny Greenwood style kill-switch (but that can come last).
Does anybody have or know where I can find a similar wiring diagram? Thanks. |

B2, How about #6? Here's what I am thinking about for one of my VBs. Thin out the clear coat, don't go too deep into the color and overspray with a tinted Nitro? I was thinking of that ReRanch stuff they use to tone down titanium dioxide white. My whole hog mod includes a string-through treatment. Thinning the coats over the wood + ferrules = better tone and sustain?
So many choices, so many guitars...wait reverse that. |

After Dmanlow's and Dr. Sardonicus' experiences, I've more or less dismissed unveiling the basswood, even a little. I give the type of body wood and the thickness of the finish a little less importance than do many.
Furthermore, now that I suddenly have 5 more factory nitro guitars to look after, plus the ones drying that I'm building, I can't get motivated about still more thin skin bodies. I've got a slate of black 51 bodies half disassembled that need prep and nitro topcoat, but I've nowhere to store them all as they dry. Too much stuff.

finally have it done. Seymour Duncan Distortion pickup in the bridge, SD Hotrails in the neck with a Stew-Mac single coil pickup ring. also added a pickup selection toggle switch and tone control. Mighty Mite neck with a custom decal from geocha, which looks real nice. Graphite nut and string trees.

Filthy,
That is a true blackout. Good job! The no PG look is nicely done. Looks like mini button Gotohs up top? What bridge did you use? Did you paint the chrome hardware, or just replace it all with black? Looks like you just left the PG screw holes, correct? Black India ink would hide those.

| Looks real "filthy" nice. I'm no fan of no pickguard but your ride looks good. Are you planning on a pg since you left the holes? Guitar stand looks real comfy too! |

DP, Thanks, Ive been collecting parts and trying to get this done for the past few months so it feels great to finally have it all complete! I left the PG screw holes and just put black PG screws in the holes. I bought one of those '51 bass control plates that is a little smaller than the stock plate, but since I left off the PG it doesn't look bad. The bridge is one of the guitarfetish direct replacement thingshttp://store.guitarfetish.com/topmohabrfit1.html, not sure if I like it that much.

That's the best black on black on black 51 I've yet seen, Filthy51.
Your attention to detail has really paid off.
Please tell us in whatever terms work for you how this set of pups performs. Also, any fitting issues with Mighty Mite?
Much obliged, and congrats,

just started making changes to a friends 51; here's where I'm at so far
 new gfs bridge and pickguard.
I still have a lot of work to do on it. plans for it below, and pretty much all that except the metallic blue paint will be done after thanksgiving

electronics will be gfs overwound liverpool humbuckers; and I'm still trying to figure out if their will be a coil tap switch on it or not; main selector switch will be on the upper bout
Edit: changed my plans for a metallic red finish to a blue metallic finish; glad i discovered the guitar reranch website

Hey Bubbanov thanks! It is an honor to get such a compliment from the master himself! I haven't been able to crank it up really loud yet but so far the bridge pup sounds pretty crisp with distortion and the neck has a lot of bass. Without the distortion you can clearly hear that the neck pup is much louder than the bridge. also without distortion the bridge sounds wimpy and weak, but with distortion it sounds sick! I had no problems with the neck, it was a perfect fit and is very straight so far.

Filthy: That is a great-looking black '51! I like it a lot and join BB in commending your attention to detail.
Justini: Nice work as well, so far. I like the GFS PG, and actually think the B/W theme you've got going is pretty cool. You could stop right there and have a real nice guitar. Good luck with the metallic finish - it may be rough "off the gun" and require lots of clear coat and lots of patience getting it smooth.
