Oly,
Great job! Make sure to post those pup results on the pup thread! Tell us what you think of that combo. I'm interested in that neck pup. I like the cut down PG. I think if it were any other colour, it would take away from the stripes. That headstock design you decided on looks great and unique.

BTW, there are things hanging from your headstock....XYZ, my friend! |

What kind of wood (and where did it come from) is the pickguard on the blonde made of? It looks really beat up and I love it!

Yeah, the Amycaster looks great, the medium toned wood is very intuitive. Nice work.

I'm going to guess Walnut on the blonde and black. Nice work, Roscoe! Looks like they belong in that room. Very chalet looking. Makes me want to drink a Bavarian beer. Good looking family, my friend!

| Thanks guys! The wood came from a tree that fell in my dad's yard. It's oak on the blackie. The blonde is sweetgum. Again from a tree in the yard that was taken down. Bubba I name all of my guitars and had not named the blonde yet as it is rather new to me. Thanks, it's now the Amycaster! Both woods (pickguards) are stained with Minwax Early American and then a topcoat of Kiwi cordovan - yep you guessed it - shoe polish. I left the clear coat off to keep that old worn look. I think that in person the blackie looks the best. Hard to tell in this picture, huh? My natural colored jazz bass has a similar guard (go to "what others do you have") that looks really nice too. |

Ah, that's why I guessed the wrong wood. Roscoe, you sneak! How did you get them flat? Do you have a planer? I'm sending some Cocobolo over to you for a copy for me.

| Cut them out of the tree trunk with a chainsaw to about 1' thick then planned down with an electric hand planner to about 1/4" to 3/8" thick then the belt sander to desired thickness then palm sander to smooth down a little more then hand rubbed to finish. I did leave a little rough though, just because I liked the look. I've been looking for some more exotic types of wood with no luck (well at least not in my price range). Cocobolo? Not familiar with that, but send it on brother. |

Cocobolo and other woods can cause severe allergic reaction and other more serious maladies. Wear long sleeves, dust mask, gloves, and other appropriate PPE. Even if you have never exhibited symptoms before, initial contact can bring on allergic reaction which will worsen with repeated exposure.
Here is a good source of information on the subject. Wood Toxicity

| Woah! Thanks for the info Mark. Well deepea would you settle for a guard out of cornstalks or something? I mean I don't want to end up with like aids or something. Hey but all seriousness aside, I will make you a pickguard if you want one. |

One last shot of the 51 GT and then I'll quit boring everyone with it ...

This is what you do when you're home sick - Take fancy pictures of your guitars!
Some final notes on the mods:
Mighty Mite bridge went in easy, center mounting hole lined up exactly with existing hole. The drilling for the ferrules on the back side was not so great - this blue metallic rustoleum is very prone to chipping. I'll eventually make a plate-style bracket I think. Functionally, this bridge is outstanding - lots and lots of sustain, and intonation and string height have been easy to set up.
Pickup details are in the pup thread but I'll just say that I'm very happy with the GFS Dream 180 and Strat pups (I was skeptical of GFS pups). The middle position blend of the two is fantastic - depending on amp settings and attack it can be dead-on strat chunky rhythm tone to Zack Wlyde-style "Bridge to Cross" clean.
The spin-a-split, rather than using the push-pull pot switch, is cool. Not as blendable as it describes on the SD website with really only about three usable settings. Full HB, full SC, and at about 10% up from SC, a nice blend with some body added to the SC sound. I'll definitely keep it.
That's it - I'm out. Thanks for putting up with my posts on the status of my month-long obsession, and for all your kind words along the way. Now, I'm on to a black one ... once I round up some more play money!
Olymark
PS: Roscoe - cool wood PGs! Sorry one more time that I painted a blond! |

Thanks Oly and the GT is awesome. Blondes are just so hard to come by. I would probally have painted a black or burst. But regardless, your GT is one nice looking '51. I'm never satisfied with my guitars no matter how good they look or play. I've always got to do something else to 'em. I haven't painted one of my own yet, but that's coming in the near future - and "pink" is most likely going to be the color. Don't laugh yet though. Wait 'til ya see it. It's going to be a tribute to my daughter. I don't understand all that everyone is talking about with the pickups, rewiring, switches, and so forth. Even after I read the threads over and over. I just don't get it. But I do want to change from my stock pups. I especially want lipsticks on my blackie (just because I think they look sooooo sweet). When you started your project I had my doubts but you did an outstanding job and should be proud. We are not bored with the pictures and information. In fact I look for more every day. Can't wait to see your black project. Don't forget the pix!

Marksound is just trying to scare you. Some people do have allergic reactions to it. It depends on the individual. I've been working with Cocobolo for YEARS. While it does have some irritative properties, minimum exposure in well ventilated areas is fine. Trust me, I know (check bio).

Oh, here's a pic of some Cocobolo:

Indeed, Bubba. It's a beautiful thing, and I'm glad to be a part of it. I hope to look back on it all when this thread hits 100 pages. |

Not trying to scare anyone, just passing on information. Just because you've never been hit by a bus doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Using PPE (personal protective equipment) is always the right thing to do, no matter who says you don't need to.
I've done my civic duty. Have a nice day.
