Well, when "The Man" says run with it, you gotta step up a little. I know Jeff is a little burnt out on the Variax thing so I will do my best to keep you guys entertained for a few custom builds.
Custom Variax Five will have a figured black korina chambered body, 5A quilted maple top and a custom rose vine inlayed neck. I'm planning on packing a lot of electronics into the cavities. Besides the Variax electronics I'm going to install Strat pickups, a Roland GK3 midi internal, sustaniac and finally internal cordless system. I think I can get it all in the guitar without much problem.

I wanted to share this find with all you new builders out there.
After watching this video from Wayne Charvel, I decided I needed a overhead pin router to make routing easier and faster. http://www.wayneguitars.com/movies/clip377.mov
With a little research I realized that overhead pin routers are very expensive. However I found a page on the Popular Mechanics site that showed you how to build one yourself for very inexpensive. http://www.exit45.com/shared/PinRouter.pdf
I have turned the page into a PDF for you. It took me about 30 hours to build this and it works very well.

MIDIRose, please keep track of your costs and hours during this project - one of us might want to compel you to build another one on commission down the road.... Seriously.

Darc I'll keep a costing list that you will be able to access from this build on my site.

Chooch this will be the first chambered guitar that I've owned, but I've done a lot of research on them and I think I am going to like it.
Ummm.......yeah.......that earvana is for this build. I am not expecting for this to be complete for about 5 to 6 weeks so you have a few minutes to get it together for me.

Rose,
Just got finished perusing your site. Awesome work. I love all the guitars, but the Nylon is spectacular!
A buddy of mine used to be a finish carpenter and wants to have a go at building a guitar this summer, so I'm bookmarking your site for future reference. |

Don't forget your own time and whatever markup it would take to make it worth your while to consider building one for someone else. I have no delusions that I could ever do that kind of work myself.

Your wood looks amazing Rose!! I'm wondering why you've routed the complete Variax cavity, how will you fix the circuit board? I thought you left the middle part "fat" for the stand-routing, but your last 2 steps show there is no wood for the stands left.
If I do any other built it will have a black limba back too, I love the look! Anyway it's going to be the lightweights Variax-built ever!
Can't wait to see the next pics from you! |

Bechti I know that I will have to stack the Variax board and the GK midi board, but I don't know which one will go on the bottom. So I decided to just use some custom sized dowel offsets glued into the top to secure the boards in place. I did the same thing on my bass build.
Yes you are right. Boy is that body pretty damn light weight right now.

Darc I've posted material costs for this build on my site, at the bottom of the CV-V page, and will keep it updated as I actually purchase items. These builds ain't cheap but I want what I want and I am not skimping.....at all!!!
