Some folks have been asking how they can use extension speakers with the Flextone XL and Duo. I have been using a 4x12 along with my Duo for a couple of years now and thought I'd give you the options on how to do it.
First, the tools you will need...
- Speaker Wire (The Thicker the better I Use Monster Cable)
- Alligator Clips (which can be purchased at Radio Shack) for those of you unsure of what an alligator clip is, think ROACH CLIP. :) For those of you unsure of what a roach clip is, GET A LIFE (just kidding)
- Soldering Gun & Solder
- SPEAKERS WITH MATCHING OHMS (meaning the same as whats in your flextone, which is 8ohms)
Wiring the FLEXTONE to a 2x12 Cabinet
Repeat the below steps both for the LEFT & RIGHT speaker. If you take a look at the speakers in the back of your amp, you'll notice 4 silver "clips" connected to the magnet. These clips are used to connect the speaker to the amp, or the speaker to another speaker. TWO of them are labeled (+), and TWO of them are labeled (-). One of each is ALREADY used to connect the speaker to your amp, leaving a + and - clip available to use.
- Measure the length of speaker cable you think you'll need to get from you Flextone, to your 2X12 Cabinet.
- Strip about a half an inch of the covering from BOTH ends of the speaker cables. On one end of the Cable solder the alligator clips to the speaker wires. (you should have two strands of wire on both ends usually colored, COPPER & SILVER) Use the COPPER for the +, and the silver for the -.
- On the other end of the cable, Solder The Copper colored part of wire to the + of your 12" speaker, and the Silver colored wire to the - of your 12" speaker (again, repeat the steps both for the LEFT & RIGHT speakers)
Now, use the alligator clips, to connect to your flextone speakers... It's as easy as that.
Wiring the FLEXTONE to a 4x12 Cabinet
Now, to use a 4X12, you have to use what is called a SERIES PARALLEL, to wire the amp up. This is done, so the amp can handle the impidence of the collective speakers.
You'll have to rewire your 4x12 cabinet like this:
A) Left Side
- Wire the + of the top speaker to the - of the bottom speaker
- Wire the - of the top speaker to the + of the bottom speaker.
B) Right Side
- Wire the + of the top speaker to the - of the bottom speaker
- Wire the - of the top speaker to the + of the bottom speaker.
C) Now, you can connect the alligator clips to the + and - of the TOP speakers to the + and - of FLEXTONE.
Using this process, you'll have your flextone speakers working, as well as your extended speakers working. So for the DUO, your rig will now consist of 2x10" AND 4x12" at the same time.
I hope that helps some of ya'll. Warren
Additional Notes...
I'd be more than happy to send anyone a diagram in Microsoft WORD if you want it, email me. warren@soulshake.com
The reason for the reverse polarity in the 4x12, is to allow your COMBO to run ALL 6 Speakers at once.
If you wanted to modify the combo to only run the 4x12 and disengage the internal speakers, you'd have to do something like the following:
- Remove the FLEXTONE speaker connections to your internal speakers.
- Connect a 1/4" MALE jack ( like the one on the end of a standard guitar cable) to the Speaker wire.
- Connect a 1/4" FEMALE Jack to the SPEAKERS themselves. this way you can plug, and unplug them.
- Then you can plug in your 4X12 cab the standard way....right into the 1/4" speaker jacks.
By doing this, you will also NOT, I repeat, NOT have to rewire your cabinet into a reversed polarity or parallel combination.
